Iyamide Thomas was born in Sierra Leone. She read chemistry at University of London King’s College and spent many years at the Institute of Cancer Research coordinating a national breast cancer screening trial.
In October 2004 Iyamide joined the UK Sickle Cell Society as their Regional Care Advisor for South London. She assists individuals with sickle cell disease realize their full potential by providing information, support, advocacy, advice and access to services. Additionally, she raises professional and public awareness of sickle cell disease through educational talks, health promotion, information dissemination and media.
Iyamide currently leads the NHS Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia Screening Programme’s Family Legacy DVD outreach project which raises awareness of sickle cell disease and testing particularly among the high risk African and Caribbean communities. Iyamide is also a Founder member of the London Focus Group on Sickle Cell in Africa a registered UK charity whose mission is to strive towards alleviating the suffering of those affected by sickle cell disorder in Africa.
