Sickle Cell Awareness Day
July is Sickle Cell Awareness Month in the UK, but awareness of this rare disease remains low. The South Thames Network is committed to raising awareness and we do this in a number of ways, including via social media and our patient newsletter. In addition we hold events with the intention of raising awareness, supporting patients, and understanding the patient experience.
Prior to this years awareness event across the network have been organised by individual hospitals and teams. This year, however, we propose to hold an awareness event for the network in its entirety and will extend the invitation to all sickle cell patients in the region. This event is being held on Wednesday 3rd July to coincide with the national awareness month. There will be lunch provided along with entertainment. We will also invite health professionals working in this field. In order to ensure that the event is inclusive we have agreed to hire a venue in the community, rather than one within a hospital. We have chosen (Inspire St Peters) a venue in Southwark that has excellent transport links to the whole region.
We aim to encourage more engagement and interaction by focusing on workshop-style segments, question and answer sessions and personal accounts. The programme includes many interesting topics. (Please keep an eye out for the programme which is currently being worked on)
This event will have a positive impact on both patients and healthcare professionals. For professionals it provides an opportunity for education and networking. In addition, professionals will have the chance to hear from patients about their experiences of living with sickle cell disease.
This event is also an opportunity for learning and networking for patients, but also has comes with a further benefit of hearing practical advice from specialists in pain management and welfare, among others. The focus on workshops and group activities will encourage patients to engage and this space for discussion will enable patients to ask questions and seek advice from health professionals and fellow patients.
SPACES ARE LIMITED THEREFORE PLEASE GET IN CONTACT TO RESERVE A SEAT. THIS ANNUAL EVENT IS VERY POPUAL!
